Transportation During Shakespeare's Times

The playwright William Shakespeare was alive from 1564 to 1616. This was before there were trains and airplanes so if people wanted to get somewhere they had three choices. 1. WALKING COST Free POPULARITY Popular with the poor. ADVANTAGES Walking is Free!!! You don’t have to wait for a carriage or boat. DISADVANTAGES It’s very slow and you can’t cross over water.   2. BOATS COST Riding a barge costs £10 . A ferry ride costs a penny for a horseman. POPULARITY Barges and ferries were popular.   ADVANTAGES England had a large network of canals which were easier to travel on than dirt roads. The only way to get to Europe was by ship. DISADVANTAGES Sometimes its not a direct way of getting where you’re going. It could cost a lot. Ships can sink. 3. HORSES AND CARRIAGES COST This is the most expensive way to travel .
